Beautiful Book

I had the opportunity to view this book in the store and it is gorgeous. Gigantic glossy photographs, many of Ralph Lauren and his family. I was waiting for this book to come out because I am a huge Ralph Lauren fan. That said, in my mind, I sort of thought this book would dissect his fashions over the past four decades. While his styles have the reputation of being timeless, the designer certainly has evolved and a book that started with his ties to his initial designs, perhaps examples of the tweed jacket he bought for his wife, etc. then moving to the polos, Blue and Black Label, Home and lifestyle, that would have made a fantastic book. This is not quite a book on the evolution of Ralph Lauren designs over the past four decades. This is more a collection of very beautiful photographs and some editorial. It is beautiful, no question. But had I purchased it sight unseen, I would have been expecting a different book, a forty year retrospective, with initial designs, runway, retail versions, fabrics, British lifestyle influences, etc.

STUNNING HUGE 14 pound book showing Mr Ralph at his best.....BUT....

First....This is an AWESOME book. No doubt about it. It is HUGE. It weights 14 1/2 pounds!!! It is really beautiful. The photos are just what you'd expect from Mr. Ralph. Sweeping, grand and elegant. There are over 700 photos..Large and small. Not a lot of text but enough to keep you well wrapped up.

BUT....Well...Really 2 buts....I am a HUGE fan of Lauren's western vintage inspired line of clothing called "RRL" or "Double RL". Have been since 1993. Was a little let down that there are only about 8 pics related to this line which Ralph admits many many times is his true passion and love in his vast empire of styles and brands.
On the upside...There are LOTS of photos from the first western collection in 1979 that was really the groundbreaking for all his RRL and Western/Roughwear/Santa Fe collections since. Many not seen in some 25 years. AA++ on that.

SECOND BUT....There are little to NO STORE photos. Inside or out of the shops. In my humble opinion...This is about 75% of Lauren's pure gift. HIS STORES!! There are unlike any other stores in the world!! Th sheer scope that each store has..It's own style depending on it's location, the accents, the style direction, etc. You can spend hours just wondering through his stores in awe. MAJOR minus in this book. DDD---

Upside again....There are many many photos NEVER published before. Most from early ad spreads. Lauren's early ads were often 15 to 20 magazine pages long...Like mini movies. Remember them all quite well from my early adulthood. Very nice to see new/old images. AAA+++

OVERALL...Excellent book. We all know Lauren could have (without any effort due to the wealth of material to draw from) split this book up into 3 or 4 or even 5 volumes. His life, the stores, the ads, the designs...hell....even the millions of dogs just used in his ads alone could fill a 200+ page coffee table book. I guess to totally cover all the Lauren aspects, you'd need a 30 pound book!

If you and Mr Ralph are very very close friends. You will WANT this book. Well worth the hefty price. Thanks Mr. Ralph for 40 years of letting us live our movies with you as the director, scripter and set designer. GREAT RIDE!!

P.S. You will need a REALLY BIG and REALLY strong coffee table for this book. Take my word.

Ralph Lauren reinvented fashion based on his vision of the past. To sum up his world in a word, it is Romance. These photos represent not only a fashion still but a pastiche of what we would like our pasts to be.
Working class or privileged, it shows a world where everyone can be proud. I rejected the naysayers who chafe at this working class guy from Long Island reminding us of Wasp and Cowboy Chic. This is Americana in all it permutations and if he becomes a billionaire in the process, isn't that American as well.

Excellent disclosure from the victim

It was great to hear the story of Travis Walton's experience from the guy it happened to. The low star review status was not a result of the reading but from the fact that I paid about $37 for a pocket book with a cover price of $1.95 on it. That's internet robbery if you ask me. Anyway, Travis paints a pretty good picture of the circumstances surrounding the abduction. Even the tree clearing job description leading up to the fateful night was interesting. As usual, the fickle public skepticism described over such an event is enough to make you sick once again. Me? The facts surrounding the case are impeccable and leave little doubt as to its authenticity. It happened the way they said it did because, damn it, they're NOT lying. The debunkers can take a hike!! Their efforts are, as usual, feeble at best. People just can't get over their long ingrained convictions about what they've been taught about life on earth. Once again, it shows how people are seriously hung up on their own long-ingrained perceptions.
I'm glad I finally read the book long after having seen "Fire In The Sky". My surprise was with the comparison to the movie and this was the fault of the movie maker. It seemed that the movie depicted fairly accurately, with the usual forgiveable story telling conventions, the overall mystery of the events and public suspicion surrounding the abduction. However, the movie scenes aboard the spacecraft are an extreme departure from what Travis claims to have experienced. It disappointed me that the movie took such liberty with the reported events and depicted such horrid procedures which Travis doesn't even come close to admitting. Quite frankly, when a movie departs that far from the reported truth I lose a lot of respect for the director/producer. It must have really pissed Travis off to see how they depicted his abduction experience just to make, what they no doubt, thought would make a better movie-going experience. If they would have told Travis's story the way he related it, it would have been every bit as compelling and had more credibility than what I finally determined the movie depiction deserved.
I must admit I was a little intrigued by the final chapter in Travis's book where he claims he MIGHT have experienced more than the two or so hours he recalls out of the five days he apparently spent aboard the craft. It sounded like he was about to reveal some deep secret but suggests that due to the warning that was revealed to him during deep regression, he should proceed no further. I got the impression he was suggesting that some serious, significant revelations were entrusted to him by the beings, but due to their warning of death, he couldn't reveal them. It sounded a bit like there was going to be a "part-two" follow up book in the works. Nevertheless, the report of his experiences are mind-boggling indeed and lend much insight into the ever-baffling UFO/abduction phenominon. I say, just remember this; if just ONE UFO experience can be proven absolutely true, then they might ALL be true!!! If you want to read of another's frustrating pursuit of the UFO truth then read Larry Warren's "Left at East Gate". Once again you'll likely admit there's no way so many could be affected by an event without it being absolutely, profoundly, undoubtedly TRUE!!

Good For Readers Who Know Nothing about the Walton Experience

If you have heard of but know nothing about Walton's experience, then you may enjoy this book. Walton presents the basic facts behind his story.

However, there is not much to present because Walton was knocked unconscious by a beam of light and simply woke up five days later. Anyone who wants detail of his abduction will be disappointed. There is none because Walton can not remember much of what happened.

Nothing against Mr. Walton, but if you have heard the basic details of this story then the book probably won't tell you much and is sure not worth the price that is being charged because the book is out of print.

I have heard Mr. Walton interviewed and I have read this book, and I think pretty clearly something terrifying happened to him. I admire the fact he does not make up a bunch of stuff to fill out the book. At $6 it would be easy to recommend, but at the prices copies are going for......No way.

Space Slugs, Waldoes, and Magical Thugs

Robert A. Heinlein's _Three By Heinlein_ (1951) is an omnibus of three Heinlein classics: _The Puppet Masters_ (1951), _Waldo_ (1942), and _Magic, Inc._ (1940). The first was originally a three-part _Galaxy_ serial; the second was a novella in _Astounding_; and the third was a novella in _Unknown_. None of these novels are part of Heinlein's Future History sequence. But all are Heinlein at his imaginative best.

_The Puppet Masters_ is a paranoid novel _par exellance_. Earth is being invaded by sluglike aliens that can control human minds. The invasion might have gone undetected were it not for the Super Secret Service run by the "Old Man" and his tough band of agents.

Nobody but Heinlein could have cooked up the outrageous method that the aliens first use to invade the Earth. And nobody but Heinlein could have predicted the logical future America in which topless nudity is required. Or the methods that the aliens use to counter _that_.

There is a strange kind of family relationship in the Secret Service. We eventually learn that the hero's father is in fact the Old Man. And while he marries the heroine, she sometimes seems to play the role of a sister to him. Still, this family is not nearly as dysfunctional as some of the families portrayed in some of Heinlein's later novels.

As other critics have noted, alien invasion stories flourished in the 1950's. The aliens were a metaphor for the Others (which were then Communist Spies). Whether or not you agree with Heinlein's politics (and there is a certain feeling of desperation to the novel), it is hard to quibble with the skill at which he tells his tale.

_Waldo_ is, if you will, a chararacter study. We open with Waldo Farthingwaite-Jones, all-around genius, performing ballet and about to do brain surgery and talking amiably to reporters. How did he get this way?

We flash back to Waldo of years ago. He is a scientific genius, right enough. But he is a physical and emotional cripple with a hatred of most of mankind. He is a recluse, living by himself in a space station. Earth encounters a large-scale technical problem. Power devices that _shouldn't_ fail are going out, one by one. Earth does not want, but needs, the genius of Waldo to solve the problem. Waldo is initially reluctant to solve the problem. What he does not realize-- not at first-- is that the solving of this problem will be the making of him.

As most readers know, nowadays, the mechanichal arms invented for handling radioactive material can be found in labs at Oak Ridge and elsewhere and are nicknamed "waldoes" after their fictional inventor.

_Magic, Inc._ is set in a "far future" world where where magic rather than science has developed as a way of understanding the world.* In Heinlein's tale, Magic, Inc. is an organization of racketeers who sell "protection" from "accidenttal" magical damage. They make the mistake of picking on Archie Fraser, an honest bussinessman. He teams up with a licensed (but irreverent) magician, an elderly witch, and an African witch doctor. This is a good book that touches on a lot of topics related to a company. Its interested to learn how we each give off signals in the work place and how they may affect performance. It talks about email versus face to face communication, leadership and overall emotional intelligence. Easy read for best understanding.

NOT HELPFULL FROM A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE

This book is so poorly written that if the professor relies solely on the book, the student will have no clue what on earth is going on, this is what I am experiencing now. The author could have done a better job dumbing it down so that a layman could understand it. One would need an intro class for this book alone before he/she would actually be able to understand some of the theories, due mainly to authors pretentiousness.

This book will change your life.

I set up my own business a couple of years ago, and I wish I'd been able to read this book before then.

It is incredibly readable, I love the author's style - it's much more sophisticated than most business books, but at the same time the information is so well presented that you can just zip through it. There's no jargon. It took me about a day to read the whole thing cover to cover, but I will be revisiting it constantly because it has such excellent advice throughout.

Customer Experience is such a big deal right now but really most of what you hear about it is waffle; this book unpicks the whole topic and gets to its fundamentals with detail and clarity. It is incredibly well researched, everything is backed up with data and examples, and even better, when I tried to implement some of the ideas using the worksheets on the author's website it really worked. It's made me think about my business, and every other business I have any dealings with in a completely different light. Some of it is deceptively simple: there were plenty of d'uh moments, but what you realize is that it's not just about being able to recognize that, for example, having to sit on hold to the bank for hours is frustrating and annoying, but it's being able to take that lesson and do something about it in your own business. This book offers a framework for the analysis of such issues and how you can not only fix them, but use them as an opportunity delight your customer so they will actually get pleasure out of using your business, and of course, come back and spend more money!

I originally bought this on the UK site because it was published there first - I have recommended it there too. I thought I'd put a review here as well because frankly, I hope businesses in the US get hold of this put it to good use; I will be buying more copies to give to my friends and colleagues.

Hands on & GPRS guidance on how to get traction from customer experience efforts.

I have now read several books about Customer Experience and I consider this one as one of the best. Having been recently appointed head of customer experience, I am particularly interested into content that connects the dots between the theory, the customer experience academic & business principles on one hand and its practical and operational implementation on the other. This book particularly delivers on that front as it is clearly written by a no non sense and hands on practitioner. I would highly recommend it to anyone willing to get real traction within his/her organization from customer experience efforts.

THE BEST BOOK for BUSINESS I HAVE READ! This book looks like another book of user experience, however I found it to be one of the best books about how to conduct a business ever. It touches lightly and gracefuly the foundations of management from its beginning until today. Points out all the problems of serving the customer right and all backed up with tons of examples. It is easy to read, clean, and if you don't get it after reading this book, you are not meant to be in business.

About the Author
Maurine St. Gaudens, a historian, scholar, and proponent of the arts, has dedicated herself to the pursuit and recognition of artists. She is a fine arts conservator and has curated numerous exhibitions.

Fascinating reading......

These books are stunning....with broad appeal to art lovers, collectors. curators and libraries. Maurine St. Gaudens has achieved a new milestone in women’s art research with these four volumes. The vast number of images includes photographs of the artists and their work, signatures and personal ephemera. Their stories are fascinating and leave you wanting more. The details add to the essence of the tales; the inclusion of holiday cards sent by the artists enhances the reality of their life and times. You can open to any page and become immediately engulfed in an artist’s life:

There are the Bruton sisters: Esther, Helen and Margaret, each following her own path, but with a strong familial artistic streak. They shared a studio in California, studied together in New York and Paris, and traveled throughout the Southwest. In 1939 the sisters received a joint commission for Peacemakers, an 144 x 57 ft. mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition. They eventually moved to northern California and set up their respective studios where they worked for the remainder of their lives.

Ruth Asawa survived the prejudices of being of Japanese descent in World War II, being interned in a camp in Arkansas and the hostility after the war which prevented her from obtaining the college degree she was entitled to in Milwaukee. It was arranged for her to attend Black Mountain College in North Carolina where her instructors included Josef Albers, Merce Cunningham and Buckminster Fuller. This environment gave her the confidence to pursue a career as as artist. Ruth and her husband Albert Lanier moved to San Francisco and raised six children. Her work is on exhibit in the new Whitney Museum in New York.

Lucretia Le Bourgeois Van Horn had a life that lends itself to a full length film. Born into wealth and privilege her childhood was devastated by tragedies. She went to France after art study in New York and became the first woman to win their highest prize in 1904. Returning to the states she met Douglas MacArthur, then an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. She resisted his proposals and later married another military aide to the President. In the 1920s she met Diego Rivera who had a significant impact on her work. Her work evolved through the turmoil of her life.

The evolution of Emerging from the Shadows began with the author’s recognition of the obscurity of most of these women of talent. This compelling story of how they continued their passion for their work throughout their lives through education, marriages, motherhood, travels, and careers. The diversity of the works shown extends its appeal to readers, collectors, and researchers.

Although the author includes some artists of recognition such as E. Charlton Fortune, Agnes Pelton, and Mabel Alvarez, her persistence in following the more unrecognized women sheds new light on these creative artists. (I personally hope this will open a portal to some further research on some of these women. Some are so intriguing they would warrant a book.)

In Volume IV there is the mystery of Paula Zen. St. Gaudens admits to her quest to find out more information in the future. The mystery is contagious......I want to know more.

Every library needs these books and these volumes would make an exceptional gift for the art lover in your life.

The book of all books about motivation

I bought this book years ago while on the search for something very different. But because I couldn't find that other book, I took this one. Wow... and I have to say, it has changed my life!!! If you are looking for a down-to-earth, easy-to-read book, this is the one. Paul has a way to show you the way in your life, that is so unique. He speaks to you like a friend would speak to you. Not that scientific, technical terms english, but basic, easy to understand and motivational. The titel says it all. If you want to know how to succeed in life... read this: YOU CAN DO IT!! And you will be able to do it. You should also read the second book he wrote called: Believe and Achieve. It is just as good as this one. You want a book that helps you change your life - this is the one!!!!

Very good book for young adults

Many years ago, I came across this book as a young adult. S$25 was not cheap for a student like myself then. I hang around in the book store for almost an hour reading it, before I decided to invest my whole week of allowance into it. Two decades down the road, looking back, this was probably one of the best 'investment' I made in my younger days. It changes my life dramatically, for the better. Only wish is to have it as a kindle copy so that I can easily refer to it every once in a while, to remind myself of certain things in life.
