I liked this one the best in the series but not a huge fan of the series.

I liked this story (#2) the best of the trio of books available in July 2016 - the group I'd give 3.5 stars to - I read them one right after the other but I'm not sure I'll remember to watch for the 4th one next year or pursue this author's other works. Clearly, I have mixed emotions about these stories.

The characters are not very likable. There are story points that didnt make sense. Specifically - in the first book - altho I'd probably be a sniveling, perpetually scared female if an alien showed up & took me captive - I'd rather read about someone who's behavior is braver, more entertaining - more as I'd wish to behave if faced with such a situation. Natalie was relentlessly irritatingly scared & whiny - yet fell into bed with her captor - then went back to being terrified. Julia in the second in the series was a more enjoyable character. Marcie in the 3rd was back in the whiney characterization but with a twist.

The hero(s) were equally difficult to like. Across the board, they were emotionless, pedantic, treated the women like dumb animals who needed to be trained (yet were in love with them), made little conversation, virtually no internal dialogue to let the reader see a 'different' side of them, no introspection, no give, no compromise. Most of their actions & cultural things were shrouded in secrecy - which made for some boring moments. Also, the skin so tough nothing can penetrate it is too extreme & I found it aggravating. The sex scenes were always vanilla, repetitive & didn't vary much - not within a book, not from story to story. More internal dialogue took place with the hero in the 2nd story - which I welcomed. But there wasn't much of it before he went back to be inscruptable.

Finally the whole children thing was creepy in an Alfred Hitchcock manner. Spoiler - why isn't this superior society anxious & working for female children when their females died out eons ago? To me that's an obvious story point that's just ignored.

The overall premise (non-abusive aliens mating with women) is one I've enjoyed by other authors. The writing is cohesive & general plots good. I wanted to know more about the world so I read on. If there was a 4th available right now, I'd probably buy (if not too expensive( & read that one too. But I doubt I'll be anxiously awaiting future installments. A world where the females are (protected! & loved!) 2nd class citizens with no rights, nothing to do all day, are always in the dark about the activities, foundation, early years & culture of their 'beloveds' isn't very appealing. Not to mention the guys are not companions - they're just one-dimensional night-time visitors.

I like how Natalie and Zacar were continued on in this book. I would recommend reading the first book to really get the joy of it. I guess I rated 4 stars I wasn't interested in reading the bad people POV. I actually skip reading about them because I knew the Warriors would defeat them and we will see the result of it. Otherwise, I thought it was good.

Good book but...

I didn't like this book as well as the first one. The heroine was whinny and wishy washy. It all came together about three quarters of the way through the story.
I hope the next book is better.

Theching Quantitative Biochemistry

As a biochemistry teacher, I find that a large number of our students are defficient in their quantitative skills. This is because many of them are biology majors, who do not have the best math background. This relatively inexpensive volume bridges the math gap for these students. It also provides the teacher with tools that increase his efficiency in dealing with the problem, without taking too much time away from the materials in the course syllabus. Although it is an older book, there is no modern replacement for what it does.

Still Valuable After All These Years

I have taught Biochemistry and Enzymology at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 20 years, and have recommended this book every year, to every student. Although the field of biochemistry has changed greatly during this time period, certain fundamental concepts have not changed at all, and remain central to a true understanding of how to do biochemistry. These include acid/base chemistry, energetics, enzyme kinetics, spectrophotometry, and isotopes. Of these, the first three gnerally give beginning (and even some advanced)students the most difficulty. In "Biochemical Calculations" Dr. Segel provides excellent explanations of the most important aspects of these topics. He provides example problems, with the answers worked out in detail, and then at the end of each chapter he provides numerous practice problems (along with the answer). I know of no other source of such a variety of practice problems covering these topics. Any student who expends the effort to work through these problems will certainly gain the confidence to tackle the common quantitative problems associated with biochemistry. Clearly this is not intended to be a biochemistry textbook, but rather a supplemental resource, to be used to more fully understand the topics covered in the early chapters of all current biochemistry texts.

This is an essential book for anyone looking to practice biochemical problems -- if only for the reason that books with as many practice problems are hard to find. If you're a true biochemist and love the subject ad will continue on with graduate work or careers in biochemistry, this may be the book for you. For everyone else... probably not. This book is very minimalist. No frills. It has an answer key to the practice problems but lacks any explainations to the answer. Reviews of the material covered in the book are scant at best and very technical. Few examples from real biochemical situations in living organisms are used. It does nothing to make you interested in the subject. The book also uses units such as normality (N) and Calories (C) rather than molarity (M) and Joules (J), the more modern and internationally accepted units of biochemical equations. I have also encountered typos and mistakes in the book in my studies. The only reason why this book is still published is that there are few other books available that offer so many practice problems. If you're looking for practice on any possible biochemical calculation, buy this book. When you're done with it, compost it. Or get $2 back by selling it to the local college bookstore. Biochemical Calculations wouldn't be so bad if a new edition would be written. Biology is a rapidly changing science, and a book that is now going on 25 years old can't compete with the newer and more reader friendly texts.

Elaine Showlater's The Female Malady: Women, Madness and English Culture, 1830-1980 is a brilliant discussion of the perception and treatment of mental illness, focusing on the female perspective. Showalter's research is thorough, and her presentation of information shows a care and attentiveness to her material that increases the confidence of the reader. Drawing on a cultural sangria of material, The Female Malady traces the systematic (and often blundering) treatment of mental disease, focusing on how women influenced the establishment as not only patients, but commentators in the form of employees and writers, activists and advocates.

The majority of the text focuses on the plight of the Victorian woman, and how doctors and the medical profession responded to what they perceived as the nervous energy attached to the rising discontent of women as a gendered class. However, the text does not end there, and moves on to discuss everything from evolving practices in institutions, the feminization of mental disease, the presence and treatment of male patients, psychoanalysis, and the feminist therapy movement. Showalter skillfully blends historical observation and study with careful literary analysis to give her reader and understanding of the material from several angles and increase their awareness of the historical implications of insanity not just for the evolution of women, but for the sciences and literary fields alike. At just 250 pages, The Female Malady is by no means a complete history, but proves to be a useful volume on its own, especially for those considering cultural and literary implications of insanity beyond the straight-forward studies of psychology or psychoanalytic theory.
