The book examines the works of Peter Winch, Charles Taylor, Clifford Geertz, Marshall Sahlins, and Gananath Obeyesekere and their contributions to the so-called rationality debate in the philosophy of the social sciences. This debate began with Winch’s criticism of Edward Evans-Pritchard and has become one of the central debates in the field since 1960s, continuing as a controversy between Sahlins and Obeyesekere.

Kei Yoshida reveals the need for a cogent solution to the problem of rationality. He identifies two main problems with previous theories: first, that they exaggerate the differences between the natural and the social/cultural, and hence they also exaggerate the differences between the natural and the social sciences; and second, that they ignore important social science problems, particularly outcomes from the unintended consequences of human actions. Yoshida urges social scientists not simply to interpret agents’ intentions or symbolic systems, but also to explain the unintended consequences of human actions.

Still entangled in positivism, cultural interpretivists claim that the social sciences differ from the natural sciences and thus reject any unity of method. Yoshida argues that we need to overcome the mistaken positivist image of science in order to develop a more fruitful philosophy of the social sciences. The analysis presented in this book will be of value to students and scholars of social epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of the social sciences, and the social sciences themselves, as well as anyone interested in the philosophical problem of rationality and relativism.

Hysterical and yummy!

I am so sad that other people found this book lacking. I laughed, I almost cried, and I was thoroughly entertained. I love Suzanne Enoch's books. You never know what to expect and The Rake was a perfect example of this.
Lord Dare is very yummy and once he decides that he wants Lady Georgianna for his own, nothing will stop him, even an ill-placed wager, the fact that the lady in question thinks she hates him, or a debutante set on being the next Lady Dare. Georgianna and Tristan's encounters were witty and fast-paced and exactly what you want to read during the summer or even a cold winter evening. I only wish I could find a man as enchanted with me as Tristan is with Georgianna.
Suzanne Enoch's books are the best and I will continue to read them over and over.

Great story of forgiveness

This was my first Enoch book and I've now read all her books because I loved it so much. She creates great characters who really compliment each other and are a pleasure to read. Dare and Georgiana are equals, all throughout. She's not a simpering miss hoping to catch a man or desperate for a proposal. He doesn't think he has the right to talk down to her or give her orders. Although these two people have hurt each other, they never do so in the cruel, abrasive way found in other "romances."

They have a rough past that they work through and *shock* actually talk about and resolve. Sex does not magically heal all in this book. Neither character forgives the other just because they can't resist the passion between them. Enoch always does a fabulous job of developing great characters you grow to love.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good romance that doesn't contain subjugation or submissiveness. Not a spanking, rape, or vicious arm-grabbing in sight.

No Matter what - Still a Great Book

I've read the other reviews and have to disagree with the negativity by some of the other reviewers. Suzanne Enoch has created another wonderful story!
At first, I didn't know whether or not I still liked Lord Dare after finding out what he had done to Geeorgiana so many years past. Yes, he was a rake of the worst sort, but you have to realize he was young and dumb, and his worst mistake was to not try to make amends way back then!
Georgiana and Tristan both had a lot of growing up to do and in this novel you saw them both grow and both become nicer people. In Georgiana's quest to teach Tristan a lesson - she learned a lesson as well! You still experienced the same wonderful Enoch sense of humor, the amazingly witty dialog and the very sensual foreplay and sex! The love story was sweet, and I really liked this story and would definitely recommend it to my regency loving romance friends. I look forward to more from Suzanne Enoch in this next "Lessons in Love" series!

About the author:
Natsuhiko Kyogoku was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, and studied at Kuwasawa Design School. After working at advertising agencies, he established his own design studio. He still works as art director, designer, and bookbinder for various projects. He is also an expert in yokai (Japanese folklore of monsters and ghosts). His novel, The Summer of the Ubume, was published in English in 2009.

About the Author
Natsuhiko Kyogoku was born in 1963. Debuted with Ubume no natsue in 1994, won the Japanese Suspense Writers Association Award in 1996 for Moryo no hako. Kyogoku has written several novels on the theme of jealousy. In 1997, he won the Izumi Koyka Award for Ura Iuemon, and the Yamamoto Shugoro Award in 2003 for Nozoki Koheii. In 2004 he won the Naoki Prize for Nochino Kosetsu Hyaku Monogatari. On top of writing, Kyoguoku is also an accomplished  graphic designer and an expert on Japanese ghosts (yokai and ghost stories).

Not what you'd expect

In the U.S., this book is destined to fail.

What you're led to expect is a pulpy horror novel--werewolves, teenage girls, serial killers and a grizzled old cop fighting the system as much as he does crime.

What you get is something very different.

Lups-Garous is much closer to Herman Hesse's Steppenwolf than Universal Studio's Werewolf. It's an existential nightmare with the trappings of the occult set in a near future where human nature, rather than humanity, is struggling to survive.

The young main characters were born just after the end of a twentieth century that they considered decadent, dirty and licentious. They are content to exist in a solitary high-tech world sequestered mostly in homes that are clean, sealed and secure, occasionally venturing out to gather briefly in counseling and "communication" sessions at a local community center. School has given way to self-education and the family has been transformed into a convenient arrangement of guardians and caretakers. The country is close to achieving its ideal of being secure, perfectly ordered and perfectly clean. Even food has been completely replaced by abundant synthetic products--no dirt, no killing.

In spite of the fact that this is a culture where mutual dependence is as unthinkable as violent crime, an unlikely trio of girls, a counselor and a cop are brought together by a series of murders that are increasing in frequency and brutality. Ultimately, their survival depends on overcoming their fear and suspicion of each other (as well as their own true natures) to solve the mystery that is spiraling out to engulf each of their lives.

Like his other recently translated novel, The Summer of the Ubume, Kyogoku's Lups-Garous swings from the coldly cerebral to the deeply emotional. Unlike Ubume, the most important dialogs are internal than external. The story unfolds almost too slowly and the characters start out appearing as flat and colorless as they believe themselves to be. But the plot becomes profoundly complex and the momentum of the story builds to a spectacular and unexpected climax.

Kyogoku is one of the greatest mystery writers in a country that excels in that genre. His unique style may be an acquired taste for some readers, but the plotlines and characters that start out vague and complex will eventually take root and stay with you like the memory of your most unforgettable dreams.

Excellent story, really riveting and keeps you engrossed in what is happening. I didn't translate the title until later and it was better that way. I also appreciated how it made me look at my tablet in a new way.

I very much enjoyed this book. Slow start but really good, fast finish. Love the characters.
No, this book isn't for everyone. A little cerebral in a semantic-philosophic way. But I sure would like a good Japanese production company to make this into an anime or a live-action movie. Not, God forbid, Hollywood and pleasepleaseplease not Disney, ever.

Very useful for all kinds of writing

I've been looking for something like this for some time. It is chock-full of ideas on how to write better articles, blog posts, ebooks and emails for marketing.
The ideas on themes are great, and provide tons of starting points for writing. This book provides everything you need to create your own format or template for various types of writing.

Ann Frederick's story: How Fascial Stretch Therapy™ came about

When I was a young girl, I had a premonition that I was destined to create something that would unite art and science. I was unsure what it would be or when it would happen, but I knew it was my calling. I also knew it would change the way people looked at the topic and that it would eventually spread worldwide. When it occurred, the development of FST felt like a combination of divine guidance and pure necessity.

FST has been a blessing beyond words. People may question why I would want to teach a technique I had developed and lose the exclusivity of being the only person to offer it. My response has always been that when we are given a gift it is our responsibility to give back. How could I not share something that has brought so much joy and hope to myself and so many others? 

From age of 4 until I was 40, I spent my life in a dance studio. I was both dancing professionally and teaching from the young age of 14. Movement and the wonder of the body have been a part of my daily life for a very long time. My other passion was the science of the human body. I took every course offered on the subject in school and read as much as I could about it. In high school, I distinctly remember going home and learning all 206 bones in one evening. 

I spent many years training dancers in flexibility and not one was ever injured on my watch. I attributed it to the focus in my classes on extensive flexibility training to which I dedicated at least 30 minutes during the warm-up component in each class. In the dance world, extreme flexibility along with strength is a non-negotiable requirement. 

While teaching a group stretch class at a local gym, I had an epiphany. I looked out over my class, which was filled to capacity, and realized that there was a great need in people to become more flexible, indeed senior citizens made a big chunk of the class. This new awareness of the general population needing and, more importantly, wanting help with their flexibility was eye opening and very exciting. My vision was becoming clearer once I enrolled at Arizona State University (ASU), getting my degree and studying Academic dance with a focus in kinesiology. 

As life would have it, at the end of one of my first stretch classes, a guy came up to me and said, "They need what you are doing here at the ASU athletic department." 
It was an opportunity to work with college athletes from 26 different sports. 

The journey of creating Fascial Stretch Therapy began in the summer of 1995 in the weight training room at ASU. It occurred on the bench press when I tied a weight belt around a football player's leg to hold it still while I stretched him. I realized that if I could get proper leverage on this big guy by getting him up off the floor and using a stabilizing strap, I was truly on to something. And the rest, as they say, is history. Each time I had someone on the treatment table in my private practice, I developed the new method a bit more. Between my studies and my private practice I was working upwards of 18 hours a day. I was on the football field in the morning taking the team through group stretches or in the weight room working with individual athletes. I worked for several hours before class and then again after class each afternoon. I would then go to my office and spend time honing the art of my newfound career. It was not unusual for me to spend ten hours a day stretching individual clients.

My hard work paid off quickly - I was asked to travel with the 1996 US men's Olympic Wrestling team. They say if you are living your life's calling, things begin to flow and drop into place and they certainly were! I was the first flexibility specialist to be a part of the Olympic games. 

I knew I would need someone to take care of my clients while I was away for the summer so I found two young people who were interested to learn the technique I had developed. I trained them privately and they became the first two FST students as well as my beginning staff. While my company's name started out as A&F Flexibility Systems, we soon changed it to the Stretch to Win Center based in Tempe, Arizona, USA.

I had a thriving practice for almost 20 years and enjoyed working with clients from many walks of life. A large percentage of my clientele were professional American football players. From 2005-2009 I was fortunate enough to be part of three Super Bowls taking care of almost the entire starting lineup for three different teams. 

It became increasingly clear that there was a growing need to develop the school and that it was time for me to end the chapter of private practice and give it my full attention to teaching others. We closed our office in 2012 to dedicate ourselves to sharing our knowledge of FST with as many as possible. This was accomplished through our professional training school, the Stretch to Win Institute.

The other serendipitous event in my life was to meet Chris, my husband, partner and the love of my life. He has been by my side since the day he walked through my office door in June 1998. Joining creative forces early in FST's genesis allowed Chris and I to evolve and develop the technique together. I choose not to speculate what my life or FST would be like without him. About the Author
Chris Frederick has been a physical therapist/physiotherapist since 1989, focusing on manual therapy - particularly Fascial Stretch Therapy™(FST) and Kinesis Myofascial Integration (KMI)  - along with movement prescription. He has an extensive background in dance, both as a professional dancer of classical ballet, as well as in the specialty of dance physiotherapy. Chris is also well versed in the ancient movement and healing arts of tai chi and qigong. He is a coauthor with Thomas Myers of the chapter on stretching in the seminal book Fascia: the tensional network of the human body edited by Robert Schleip et al.
Ann Frederick is a former professional dancer, having grown up in her Mom's dance studio, starting to dance at the age of 4. She has practiced manual therapy for over 20 years, specifically in the field of flexibility training, focusing on assisted individual stretching, group stretch and dance instruction. Ann originally created a unique system of neuromyofascial manual therapy called Stretch to Win Fascial Stretch Therapy® for the USA Men's Olympic Wrestling Team of 1996. Besides improving professional athletic performance, she soon discovered that FST also rapidly helped other clients with a variety of chronic, unresponsive pain conditions, strength imbalances and other common neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
Chris and his wife Ann are both certified by Thomas Myers in Kinesis Myofascial Integration and are also the authors of the popular book Stretch to Win. Chris and Ann directed their own highly successful center for Fascial Stretch Therapy, physical therapy/physiotherapy, Kinesis Myofascial Integration, sports massage and Pilates for nearly 20 years. They are now Directors of the Stretch to Win Institute, where they offer certification training workshops in FST.

Great for everyone! Set it free with FST!

Fascial Stretch Therapy has changed my life. I am a competitive athlete that up until 2 years ago was in and out of rehab with minor but limiting injuries in my sports of powerlifting and ice hockey. I was fortunate enough to be treated by an FST therapist to help with a nagging hip injury. Two hours later the pain was gone and it did not return! I was amazed and immediately felt compelled to learn about and share FST!

I am now a Level 2 therapist working towards my Level 3 Certification. It is books like this one and Stretch to Win that keep us therapists sharp while teaching those not as educated in stretch therapy about the magic. I was very excited to read this book and it has lived up to my expectations. This book is backed by evidence and science. It takes a look at every angle of recovery and gives you the tools to implement the best recovery methods for yourself or clients. Within the first chapter I had already learned something new. Enough talking, but this book.

wondering if you should buy this book? the answer is yes!

ann + chris frederick are true innovators of our time and we are so fortunate to have this dynamic pair available to us. their passion, energy and devotion to this work is contagious!

in a world where we push, push, push - fascial stretch therapy (fst) brings both client and therapist back to body awareness and to a place where we tune in again - this is where the magic happens, when we listen to our bodies. the words, 'no pain, no gain' DO NOT apply here.

in my 10 year career as a massage therapist, i have seen time and time again that once a client is off the table and gravity and old movement patterns take over all that work is quickly gone. personally, i had always hoped for more lasting change for my clients. and this IS possible with fst (not to mention, much easier on you as a therapist).

as an acupuncturist, i have found that the combining fst with acupuncture makes INCREDIBLE and lasting changes. treating the fascia is the key to making structural and constitutional changes.

if you are currently an fst practitioner, this is an invaluable resource to have in your library. continuous study of this material will enable you to gain a greater understanding of this work, which will translate into much more effective treatments for your client. the book is as well structured as the therapy itself. it contains theory, positioning of client and therapist, movement goals and cue's. it's like having your fst manuals in one beautiful color photo'd package. :)

Good introductory treatment, but has some issues

This book has two principal aims. In the first half of the book, the aim is the study of discrete time and continuous time Markov chains. The first part of the text is very well written and easily accessible to the advanced undergraduate engineering or mathematics student.

My only complaint in the first half of the text regards the definition of continuous time Markov chains. The definition is introduced using the technical concepts of jump chain/holding time properties. This doesn't tie out well with the treatment of the discrete time case and may seem counter-intuitive to readers initially. However, the author does establish the equivalence of the jump chain/holding time definition to the usual transition probability definition towards the end of Chapter 2.

The second half of the text deals with the relationship of Markov chains to other aspects of stochastic analysis and the application of Markov chains to applied settings.

In Chapter 4, the material takes a serious jump (explosion?) in sophistication level. In this chapter, the author introduces filtrations, martingales, optional sampling/optional stopping and Brownian motion. This is entirely too ambitious a reading list to squeeze into the 40 or so pages allocated for all of this, in the opinion of this reviewer. The author places some prerequisite material in the appendix chapter.

Chapter 5 is a much more down-to-earth treatment of genuine applications of Markov chains. Birth/Death processes in biology, queuing networks in information theory, inventory management in operations research, and Markov decision processes are introduced via a series of very nice toy examples. This chapter wraps up with a nice discussion of simulation and the method of Markov chain Monte Carlo.

If the next edition of this book removes chapter 4 and replaces it with treatment of an actual real-world problem (or two) using genuine data sets, this reviewer would be happy to rate that edition 5 stars.

Unique but poorly written

This is a unique book that bridges the gap between undergraduate and graduate treatment but only in the first three chapters. It does require a number of preparatory courses, from multivariate calculus, linear algebra, differential equations to solid understanding of at least undergraduate level of probability, preferable something like Williams' "Probability with Martingales" which Norris seems to refer to. In the United States this is a preparation that is available only in elite schools as many do not even require differential equations for mathematics major while probability is indeed a rare feat to see in mostly pathetic US undergraduate math curricula.

Unfortunately the book is not well written and that is the main reason why it is not more popular than it is. The text beyond first three chapters is largely useless and hard to sort out, with very little care about readability.

There are moments in the text when the author assumes his reader is quite telepatic as some proofs are rather sketchy, and some are even erroneous. Given the first edition that is forgivable although fairly annoying on occasion. The book also contains quite a few misprints adding to confusion. In its scope, the Chapter 1 on discrete Markov Chains is charming, rigorous, and accessible. I have not seen elementary Markov Chains treatment with such a solid level of rigor. Intuition is paired with precise proofs. Chapter 2 on the other hand is somewhat strange and too lax but with important treatment of special cases of Markov Processes to motivate the theory with the main result of definition of continuous Markov Chain. Prior to that the author has chosen "holding times - jump process" presentation which is intuitivelly easier to understand although the definition itself is more intricate. Unfortunately, the author failed to prove the equivalence of the definition with the standard "transition probabilities" definition since the only place he proves "Strong Markov Property" is in the appendix where he made a whole sorry mess with erroneous proofs of lemmas leading to the theorem. The chapter 2 is supposed to strengthen the basic understanding and, in my view, it does that well. Proofs are sometimes sketchy and require considerable work to decipher through. For example Theorem 2.8.6 is appealing to Lemma 2.8.5 while it actually uses different fact that is never proven. It looks like Norris is not aware of that in his sloppiness. I've found myself hard to believe in that proof so me and my colleague have proven theorem using a different deduction. Only at the very end of the chapter the author returns to appropriate precision. Continuous treatment of main results in Chapter 3 is somewhat lacking precision as well, plenty of messy proofs there, in particular conditional probabilities are treated too intuitive. For example stopping time sigma algebra is never properly introduced even though it was used in statements of few propositions with reference to stopped variables (in Chapter 2) but without any precision.

I would assume this book is beneficial for the introductory graduate course on stochastic processes and Markov Chains although not more than that. That is for the first 3 Chapters. As short as it is, it is a good alternative for one semester course.

I am not so sure what is the purpose of the 4th Chapter as it is insufficient to be serious enough. It is rather poorly written appealing on intuition and lacking precision. The mortal flaw of the whole chapter is that the author uses terms that are never defined, proofs that are sketchy appealing on intuition, and to top that off the senseless notation is just relentless, the same continues in Chapter 5. The end of the section on Brownian motion is a classic example of a largely useless text that is only readable by the author himself. The whole chapter is probably some of the worst math writing I have seen in probability texts though there is no shortage of rather bad publications. Any reader would be served the best to avoid the whole Chapter 4 as it requires disproportionate time to read it given meager benefits of learning anything from it. Chapter 5 on applications suffers again from casual and sketchy writing with little care about presentation. Even though it presents the read with valuable examples, for example very nice applications in Queuing Theory, it is probably not worth the effort to read. It is full of tough misprints that make it very hard to read, for example upside down fraction in description of Hastings Algorithm. Since it is largely irrelevant for those going into any specialized direction given how sketchy it is, it can be easily discarded until Norris makes a more consistent presentation, perhaps in the second edition.

Make no mistake, this BOOK REQUIRES GRADUATE LEVEL OF MATURITY as far as most of math majors in US go. I do not see any undergraduate beside exceptionally gifted ones to be able to read this text. The reader is expected to fill in many gaps in proofs. Take a look at the theorems 3.5.3 and 3.5.6. Everything is correct there but sloppiness of presentation creates a mess pretty hard to read. In the proof of 3.5.3 there is a reference on Fubini while in fact the proof goes by conditioning expectation. In 3.5.6 bunch of (correct) facts are thrown at the reader with a showel and without any regard for clarity of presentation. One would not expect that from a textbook.

Also on the negative side, measure theoretic aspect is sketchy/ambiguous/insufficient, the short appendix is not a great help for the same reasons including few confusing errors that should be embarrassing to the author. The editors have not done a good job of removing misprints. There are plenty of those, this is already a staple of poor editing in Cambridge Press publications, some are obvious but some are difficult to spot making already sketchy presentation by the author hard to decipher. Case in point - try to find a misprint on the 4th line of page 187.

This book needs to be rewritten and author ought to chose what level of rigor/intuition he wants throughout the whole text instead of changing the approach from chapter to chapter. If he choses to omit important deductions then he should have 0 misprints. Nevertheless this is a charming and serious book though it could have been written significantly better than it is. Given that nowadays we, the readers that is, are putting up with all sorts of rather slopy textbooks this is not so bad given the first edition.

Very useful if you have a good mathematical background!

I found this book very useful for a better comprehension of Markov chains and for understanding the theory, but you need a very good knowledge of mathematics like calculus, matrix, differential equations and statistics in order to keep going in your reading. Don't expect full numerical examples, be ready for demostrations! I recommend it for students interested in stochastic processes or looking a good approach to the basis of Markov processes.
