About the Author
James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. He received a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of Total Quality and Organization Development. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and is a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), in addition to other professional organizations. He continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He is currently a Board Member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-aged children, and is an active volunteer at his church.

Poor Mr. Popper isn't exactly unhappy; he just wishes he had seen something of the world before meeting Mrs. Popper and settling down. Most of all, he wishes he had seen the Poles, and spends his spare time between house-painting jobs reading all about polar explorations. Admiral Drake, in response to Mr. Popper's fan letter, sends him a penguin; life at 432 Proudfoot Avenue is never the same again. From one penguin living in the icebox, the Popper family grows to include 12 penguins, all of whom must be fed. Thus is born "Popper's Performing Penguins, First Time on Any Stage, Direct from the South Pole." Their adventures while on tour are hilarious, with numerous slapstick moments as the penguins disrupt other acts and invade hotels. Classic chapter-a-night fun. (Ages 5 to 10) --Richard Farr

About the Author
Richard Tupper Atwater (1892–1948) lived in Chicago and worked as a journalist, often writing humorous pieces for newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune. He wrote two books for children before beginning Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a 1939 Newbery Honor Book. Before he could finish the story, however, he became ill. His wife, Florence Hasseltine Atwater (1899–1979) finished the book, helping launch a story that has remained popular for generations.

I've lived 26 years on this earth. In those 26 years I've learned a lot about children's books. I've learned which ones are considered the holiest of holies and which are to be condemned and spat upon. So I was completely taken aback when I learned that there was a 1938 children's book that absolutely no one had ever told me to read before. "Mr. Popper's Penguins" was a delight to discover. Suddenly I was privy to reading a charming story of a man and his penguins, and I had never even heard a peep about this tale from anyone. What gives? Why isn't "Mr. Popper's Penguins" as well-known and well-read as "Cheaper by the Dozen" or "Stuart Little"? There is no answer to this question. There is only this wonderful book, well-illustrated and magnificently written for the younger set.

Mr. Popper is a house painter, and mostly a good one. True, he does sometimes fall into fits of fancy, dreaming about the Arctic explorers and the ice floes to the North and South. His wife and children don't necessarily understand his dreams, but that doesn't sway Mr. Popper. One day, out of the blue, he receives word that one of the great explorers he wrote, Admiral Drake, read his letter and is sending him a present. As any child who remembers the title of the book might guess, a penguin comes hopping out of a newly delivered crate the next day. Mr. Popper is charmed by the little guest, and names him Captain Cook. Cook is a curious beasty, and the Poppers do everything from outfitting their refrigerator to taking Captain Cook for walks. When the penguin falls into a deep depression it is only the delivery of a second penguin from the zoo, Gerta, that cheers him up. Soon the penguin pair lay some eggs and the Popper household is privy to ten more lovely jumpy penguins. With money hard to come by it takes a clever Mr. Popper to come up with a way to make his penguins not only profitable, but stars.

First of all, make certain that if you are reading a version of this story that you have grabbed one that has Robert Lawson's beautiful illustrations. The same illustrator that's responsible for the lovable picture book, "Ferdinand the Bull" has switched his focus from beef to fowl. These penguins are remarkably well drawn, from their inquisitive little eys to their ugly webbed feet. If you've never seen a Lawson illustration, here would be a good place to start. The writing of Richard and Florence Atwater is extremely readable for anyone of any age. The phrase, "they just don't make `em like that anymore" is unfair, but also kind of true. There's something to the simplicity of this book that you just can't find anywhere else. It is, all in all, just fantastic. And with Lawson's adept renderings of all the characters and situations, you are left in no doubt that this is one of the best books of this or any other age.

So a great wrong has been righted. I am no longer in the dark regarding "Mr. Popper's Penguins". If you'd like to introduce your kids (or, heaven forfend, yourself) to a fantastic piece of penguin rookery, grab yourself a copy of this l'il number. It's bound to make you a fan.

Great for Teachers to Use For A Thematic Unit

My daughter recently brought this book home, and after reading only one page, I went and bought my own copy! I had to have this for my classroom!
I teach children with mild to moderate specific learning disabilities who need to regularly experience success in reading if they are ever going to become lifelong readers. What better way to foster desired literacy behaviors than using this delightful tale of an absentminded housepainter, his tidy, yet serious wife, their two children, and 12 performing penguins!
After reading this book, I thought that it would be ideal to use as the focus of a thematic unit on penguins. Believe it or not, there are many themes in the book that lend themselves to serious classroom discussion. For example, Mr. Popper daydreams of far-away places. There is the theme of daydreaming, why people daydream, as well as the theme of travel. Students could be asked to journal about their daydreams, as well as their hopes and dreams of visiting faraway places, which leads into a study of the geography and culture of other people.
In my 6th grade language arts class, I plan on focusing on the 17 different types of penguins there are, where they are found, some of their habits, as well as studying about polar exploration. Thanks to this timeless tale, I have a wealth information to use for exploration with my own class.
Mr. Popper's Penguins is a wonderful example of how a well written trade book can be used across the curriculum, to foster lifelong literacy habits, and broaden a child's horizon.

An enduring favourite

My Grade 4 students gobble up this book! I include it in several " thematic literature kits": animal stories, award winners, and humourous stories. Reluctant readers are especially attracted to it, as it isn't difficult to read independently. It really grabs their attention and makes them laugh out loud. Even slow readers work hard to make their way through this novel.
Kids especially love all the penguins, their hilarious antics, and the bizarre trouble they get into.
It's also full of very interesting knowledge. We delve a little into history, getting a glimpse of life in the 1930's. We learn some geography, about exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic. And we certainly learn about penguins!
Written in the 1930's, this book has become a classic that hasn't lost any of its appeal for kids today. I've never seen a kid who didn't love it!

Kindle version not viable

This book illuminates a tragic flaw in the Kindle. Critical portions of the book such as source code listings and circuit diagrams are in graphical format (figures). The rendering of these crucial items is so small as to make them unreadable. The type size setting has no impact on these graphical objects. Selecting the object and using zoom is also of no help, as these objects are at or near the size of the kindle screen, so zoom doesn't make them larger. Such materials should be dropped from the Kindle store, or, ideally, Amazon should update the firmware to solve this serious deficiency - even a crude solution such as adding a more sophisticated zoom with a pan function would be a help. In the meantime, buy the print version, and let Amazon know that we want technical books for the Kindle that we can actually use, not money-wasting junk like this.

Man the Bird could play

This book really helps you appreciate what a master of jazz Charlie Parker really was. Seeing all of these solos with the chord changes right above sometimes makes you wonder "How did he think to do that?"

I like using this book for sight reading practice and a little bit of analysis afterwards. I read through the solos veeeery slowly (did I mention he's ridiculous?) and then look over the parts that I thought sounded pretty cool to see what he was doing. If you're a trombone player don't be intimidated that he had buttons to press very rapidly, just buy the book and play some great jazz, even if you're playing at 1/3 the tempo.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in improvising or just reading jazz. Especially trombone players.

Parker for Trombone

The book is an awesome transcription of Charlie Parker and his amazing solo and style. It is very accurate. It's a great way to enhance your improvisation library. The only problem that I had, was that the music is written down an octave than sounded by Charlie Parker. Obviously the tenor sax plays in a higher range. It's not really a problem, but you have to play an octave higher along with the recordings to try and match the timbre of the instruments. I guess it saves you from reading ledger lines or tener clef. Anyway, great book for a great price.

A must have for a jazz vocab.

First off, I have to correct funkybass4ever "baynzer66" 's review as he/she has commented that all transcriptions are in the key of C. This is incorrect and misleading. However all transcriptions are devoid of key signatures which is very useful in jazz, especially in bebop due to the rapid movement through key centers and the heavy use of chromaticism.

Now to the book itself. I view the omni book as one of the most valuable books of transcriptions out there, even if there are a few mistakes in it. It's one of those books that anyone learning the language of jazz needs to at least look at. It's nice to see that it's in bass clef (as I play bass); my treble clef version (I also play guitar) is well hammered and much loved.

If you are a bass player (or anyone else for that matter with good taste) and want to see/hear a bass player using Parker's vocabulary check out Dario Deidda, start at youtube. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that!)

About the Author
William Gerin received his BA in Psychology from Stanislaus State College in Turlock, California, in 1979, where his specialty was in operant and classical conditioning avoidance models in animals. He then became interested in studying the role of human interactions in emotional regulation and received his PhD in Social Psychology from Columbia University in 1984 under the mentorship of Stanley Schachter. In 1985, he undertook an NIH-sponsored postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology at the Cornell University Medical Center, where he studied with Thomas Pickering. He then went on to Mount Sinai Hospital, and then (back to) Columbia University, until 2007. He has now moved his laboratory to Department of Biobehavioral Health at the Pennsylvania State University, where he Professor of Biobeahvioral Health, and is the director of the Experimental Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Laboratory. His current research areas include the examination of acute biological responses to stress and negative emotionality, including blood pressure, heart rate variability, cortisol, endothelial function, and inflammatory markers. His other areas of study include the role of emotional regulation in the development of hypertension and coronary heart disease; behavioral interventions to improve medication adherence in culturally diverse patient populations; health disparities in cardiovascular disease, and the role of psychosocial factors in cardiovascular disease.

Good, but could be better

This book is a great overview of NIH grant writing, which programs you should submit your grant to and so forth.

However, the grant writing strategies are heavily focused on clinical studies an not basic science, so the last third of the book is only of modest use to those writing basic bench science grants.

The first half of the book is great for navigating all of the different NIH programs and deciding which program is best for you depending on which stage you are at in you career. This part of the book is very valuable since the NIH can be a bit of a maze.

I gave this a 3-star because the book claims to be much more than it really is. If you are submitting a clinical research grant, then this is the book for you. However, if you are a basic biomedical bench scientist, I would consider other of the books out there. Also there is almost no discussion of what to do after you submit, how to respond to criticism and improve your chances of being funded. This is almost half of the battle of getting a grant.

Gives an excellent introduction to submitting an NIH grant

I am planning on submitting an NIH SBIR grant. I got this book to get some info about this process, and have found the book to be an excellent introduction to this process. Most of the info presented in the book can of course be found elsewhere. But, the book does a very good job of organizing all these resources. In addition to info found elsewhere, it contains some new info such as:
* forming consortium is not that hard,
* make sure you address reviewers concerns immediately,
* a lot of specific advice on the actual writing such as the importance of telling a story.

About the Author

Sue Dallas VN Cert. Ed. is a qualified veterinary nurse, and has worked in veterinary schools and veterinary practices in the UK and in North America. She has taught on both veterinary nursing and animal care courses for over 22 years and has been involved in a number of educational and examination developments in the UK and New Zealand. Sue has spoken at veterinary congresses both in the UK and around the world, promoting nursing and care of animals through training and education.

Emily Jewell BSc (Hons), MSc, Cert. Ed. is a Curriculum Area Manager in Animal Management at Reaseheath College in Nantwich, Cheshire. Emily graduated from the University of Leeds in 1995 with a BSc (Hons) in Animal Science. After working in a land-based college in Wiltshire for 7 years, she returned to study and graduated from Harper Adams University College in 2003 with an MSc in Animal Health and Welfare. Emily has taught across a range of subjects and has had responsibility for many different species. Emily has also previously worked as an External Verifier in Animal Management for the awarding body Edexcel.
