The 1969 and 1986 Vienna Conventions on the Law of Treaties are essential components of the contemporary international legal order. They aim at regulating what has become the main source of public international law and a crucial tool in inter-state relations. The Vienna Conventions codify to a significant extent the customary rules that pre-existed in the field, but also put forward innovative concepts, such as jus cogens. In spite of their importance, these two instruments had so far not been the object of a detailed commentary. These volumes fill that gap, by providing both international and national lawyers with an in-depth analysis of each provision of both Conventions. The structure of each commentary is essentially uniform, with the first part dedicated to the exposition of that provision's object and purpose and to the assessment of its customary status. The second part of each commentary deals with the main issues of interpretation raised by the provision in question. Extensive reference is made to the travaux preparatoires of both Conventions, including the work of the UN International Law Commission and the proceedings of the 1969 and 1986 diplomatic conferences, and to practice both prior to and following the adoption of the Conventions. The 90 + authors who contributed to the book come from twenty different countries and include some of the most respected experts in international law.

About the Author

Olivier Corten teaches public international law at the Universite libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), and director of the Revue belge de droit international/Belgian Review of International Law. He is the author or co-author of four books (Droit d'ingerence ou obligation de reaction ? - Les possibilites d'action visant a assurer le respect des droits de la personne face au principe de non-intervention (Bruylant, Brussels, 1992, et 2nd ed., 1996), L'utilisation du raisonnable par le juge international (Bruylant, Brussels, 1997), Ex-Yougoslavie : droit international, politique et ideologie (Bruylant, Brussels, 1998) and Le droit contre la guerre - L'interdiction du recours a la force en droit international contemporain, Pedone, Paris, 2008) and of more than sixty articles.

Pierre Klein teaches public international law and is Director of the Center of International Law of the Universite libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). He taught as visiting lecturer, then professor, at the Universite catholique de Louvain, the University of Ottawa, McGill University, the Abomey-Calavi University (Benin), the University of Paris XI and the Hague Academy of International Law. Super cute Japanese country girl

Per Kotori Kawashima who is the photographer of this book, this is not documentary of the "Mirai-chan" and even this name is not real her name, but you could see how this 4 year-old girl is growing up in this very country side of Japan. How messy the house is, her mismatch clothing, snotty face with food crumbles, everything is so natural and nostalgic that remind me of the "good old time of Showa-era" about 40 - 50 years ago. Most of all, you will falling love this cute little girl with strong face expression, who is so natural and been herself....

An amazing book about an amazing man who lived in amazing times!

I found this book a very interesting and entertaining read. I appreciate that if one doesn't share my enthusiasm for bygone days, and jolly olde England in particular, you may find this book tediously dull and boring, but assuming you harbor even a shred of curiosity and admiration for how things once were I can guarantee this book will not be a waste of your time.
Grimaldi was a phenomenon in his time, a national treasure. One regrets that his career predated motion picture photography by nearly 100 years considering what high esteem his performances were held in by his contemporaries. He was the toast of England and a household name despite the fact his life was wracked with personal tragedy and he had to retire early (at age 48) because years of physical performance had rendered him a helpless cripple.
Although it's a longish book I read through it rather quickly due to the simple fact that I was incapable of putting it down!

Author's insecurity distracting

I could not put this book down for the first 120 pages or so. Soon, however, it became hard to focus on the author's business proposition, as I was distracted by the author's insecurity. Virtually every page has someone telling her how beautiful and wonderful she is as this 40-year-old -- who has somehow managed to get through her adult professional life without saving a dime -- drinks her way through the book and jumps between so many lovers that it's hard to keep track. Her advice and insights are not new, although she reports them as revolutionary. When she wonders why her sugar daddies aren't sticking around, the answer is apparent to the reader. While this has the makings of a funny and interesting book, but it just came across as desperately insecure and sad.

Almost annoying to read..

When I first came across this book at borders I was intrigued. I thought it might be an interesting read because I had never read anything on her sort of "career" before. Needless to say if all "call girl" books are like this, I never will agian. First and formost, this may be the most insecure memoir I have ever come across. When she is not talking about her "Angelina Jolie lips" or how petite she is, one of her sugar daddies is. She is constantly building herself up in a subtle way, but her agenda becomes more and more obvious as her story progresses. This is most prominent when she has a fight with her freind's girlfriend named Ivy. Ivy has a problem with Hollys way of life and Holly goes on a rant to defend it. Obviously that is expected, but the way the author inserts her comments into the situation was most annoying. For example she says "She really just wasn't getting it" and when the arguement is over and she makes Ivy tear up, she says "Opps, sorry to be a bubble buster". So basically, I was hoping for an honest telling of the joy and heartache of being a mistress to man who showers her with money and what I got was a whining tale of a self absorbed drama queen. So as you may have guessed I do not recmoend this book.

Worst book ever

When forty-year-old Holly Hill began dating John, a married multi-millionaire, Holly, a trained psychologist, was somehow naïve enough to believe that he would leave his wife. By the time he ended their affair, Holly had quit her job and acquired a taste for the wealthy lifestyle John had provided her. When a mortgage payment came due, rather than borrow money from a friend and begin job hunting, Holly decided to become a "sugarbabe" and prostitute herself to married men for $1000 a week.

In a chatty voice Holly discusses each man she met after advertising herself online. She claims to have received 11,000 responses to her ad, but begins the memoir by telling us she had a propensity for both extreme over and understatement. She describes every dull conversation focusing on the men's jobs in finance, their sleazy plans for deceiving their wives, and their praise of her over-the-top beauty and intelligence (both called into question by a picture I found of her and the absurdity of her dialogue). Holly keeps waiting to feel ashamed or guilty, but realizes that she is sexually aroused by men desiring her enough to buy her, whether or not she is attracted to them. Even the men she does find appealing seem repulsive on paper. I normally enjoy sensationalistic, juicy stories, but I nearly gagged reading Holly's detailed sex scenes with these slimy men.

Holly claims a large hypothalamus explains her willingness to take extreme risks. In truth, it seems more like she is simply greedy and foolish. And a hypocrite. She fakes sympathy for the deceived wives she calls "stupid cows" and tries desperately to convince the reader that she is performing a public surface. "Once again... I was providing the confidence to change a life." She claims to relieve the burden of sex from her lovers' wives so that they can live together harmoniously. She assures herself that the wives must be as cold and unsympathetic as their husbands say, ignoring that that the husbands' involvement with her should make it clear that they are untrustworthy in the first place. She even begins working on this memoir claiming that she simply hopes to show women what men really want and save marriages. In truth she never saved anything from her $1000 paychecks and is again desperate for money. And for that matter, I cannot imagine any married woman bearing Holly's delighted claims that men simply want sex and find monogamy, and honesty, impossible.

Finally, after 280 pages, the wife of a man with whom she had a short (financially unrelated) affair asks how she can eagerly aid in deceiving wives who love and trust their husbands. It as if a light goes on in Holly's dim brain as she realizes that perhaps having sex with married men might cause their wives pain. Even still, her first reaction is to resent women's willingness to attack each other rather than lay all blame on the cheating husbands.

Throughout the memoir, Holly attempts to defend herself against her readers. She claims that when a friend first suggested she become a sugarbabe, she was shocked by the thought, but then realized she was simply being close minded, making it clear that readers must also be close minded if they condemn her behavior. She even claims to be a feminist by breaking sexual taboos, but it is hard to make that case given that she is shackling herself to men for the sake of money.

Within the first 50 pages of Holly's rants on how she beautiful she is, how every man wants her and every woman resents her sexiness, I could not wait to put it down.

account of confused religious times

The book is an account of the life of Zenon; who manoeuvres through a world were the threats are many. The mid-16th century in north west Europe plagues by many struggles for life. The religious clashes could as well be viewed as social or economic power struggles. Zenon is a philosopher and a medical scientists. The Flanders he lives in is torn between the Catholic Spanish King and the protestant North; where the Prince of Orange has started a guerrilla against the suppressor.

The book is a good reconstruction of the times. All the historical events of the day have somehow found a way in to the story. Sometimes to the detriment of the flow of the story and the development of the characters. So in order to enjoy the book you will have to have some historic interest. Yourcenar's style is sometimes swollen with long sentences and descriptions that I could not always follow. Yet the book keep your attention to, maybe especially, the unavoidable end. A comparison with the world and time of the book with the Algeria of this day was caused by a misunderstanding of Yourcenar's background. Nevertheless one could see lines of comparison.

L'Oeuvre au Noir by Marguerite Yourcenar: Lovely story capable of transporting you to the sites! Excellent writing with a beautiful and concise language. Almost poetic though epic too. Good research about European history!! And for the non native french speakers, an excellent opportunity to learn new words and beautiful expressions! I recommend it without restrictions!

Del is C. H. Lundquist Professor of Marketing and Chair of the Marketing Department at the University of Oregon. He has served as Director of the MBA Program, Director of the Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship, Director of the Oregon Executive MBA Program, Interim Director of the Museum of Art, and Associate and Acting Dean of the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon. He has also taught at Southern Illinois University, Xiantan University (PRC), the Netherlands School of Business, in Boston University’s Overseas Program, Xiamen University (PRC), and the Institute for International Studies and Training in Japan.

Del has written a number of business cases and numerous journal articles as well as three widely used college textbooks.
