About the Author
Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) was born in Portsmouth, the second of eight children. He began working in a London boot-blacking factory at the age of twelve to help support his family after his father was imprisoned for debt. The family later recovered financial stability through inheritance but his experience in the factory at a tender age and the living conditions of working-class people became major themes of his works as he championed the causes of the poor and oppressed. A worldwide literary phenomenon in his lifetime and renowned as much for his journalism and public speaking as for his novels, Charles Dickens now ranks as the most important Victorian writer and one of the most influential and popular authors in the English language. His memorable and vividly rendered characters and his combination of humour, trenchant satire and compassion have left an indelible mark on our collective imagination.

An amazing book about an amazing man who lived in amazing times!

I found this book a very interesting and entertaining read. I appreciate that if one doesn't share my enthusiasm for bygone days, and jolly olde England in particular, you may find this book tediously dull and boring, but assuming you harbor even a shred of curiosity and admiration for how things once were I can guarantee this book will not be a waste of your time.
Grimaldi was a phenomenon in his time, a national treasure. One regrets that his career predated motion picture photography by nearly 100 years considering what high esteem his performances were held in by his contemporaries. He was the toast of England and a household name despite the fact his life was wracked with personal tragedy and he had to retire early (at age 48) because years of physical performance had rendered him a helpless cripple.
Although it's a longish book I read through it rather quickly due to the simple fact that I was incapable of putting it down!

The book's condition was just as described. I gave it as a gift, and the reipient enjoyed it. It arrived promptly, even sooner than expected. If you are a Dickens fan, it's a great book to have, unusual for Dickens.
