Excellent study on Philippians
By Joan N.
Jeremiah has given us an excellent study of Philippians. While this book is a reprint of a 2006 release, it is as relevant as ever.
We are given the background to this letter from Paul. Jeremiah suggests that the theme of Philippians is joy and “The secret of [Paul's] joy was his relationship with Jesus Christ.” Paul's experience in prison, says, Jeremiah, was the crucible that tested his joy. If Paul's relationship to Jesus could bring joy in his situation, certainly we can learn to rejoice in difficult circumstances.
Jeremiah highlights the personal nature of the letter and the lessons learned through adversity. He explores the purpose and function of suffering and the importance of developing Christ likeness. He emphasizes the necessity of right thinking and provides great guidelines toward having the right attitude.
Even though I've read a number of commentaries on Philippians, I still earned something new in reading this one. I really liked Jeremiah's explanation of “work out your own salvation,” making reference to that expression being used in mining. I had forgotten or perhaps never realized that the Philippian church had been started by women! Other topics I really appreciated included his discussion on what it meant that Jesus “emptied Himself,” the dangers of legalism, and the essential elements of continuing to grow in faith. Jeremiah highlights relevant Greek words from time to time but in a way that a layman can easily understand.
An excellent Reader's Guide has been included with suggestions for personal and group use. It includes ice breakers, discovery questions, personal application questions, prayer focus, optional activities, and homework in preparation for the next session. It would make a great twelve week study and I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

Being JOYOUS! -- just like Paul
By In the Bookcase
David Jeremiah returns with a powerful study on the book of Philippians. And it's all about JOY!
Essentially, he dissects Philippians into small segments, groups of a few verses, and brings out the central theme of that passage. (This is the same setup he used on the book of James in 'What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do', which I thoroughly enjoyed as well!)
The 12 chapter topics of Count It All Joy include:
The Joy of Community
The Joy of Adversity
The Joy of Integrity
The Joy of Unity
The Joy of Responsibility
The Joy of Ministry
The Joy of Humility
The Joy of Victory
The Joy of Maturity
The Joy of Harmony
The Joy of Security
The Joy of Serenity
So much of Paul's letter to the people of Philippi stresses on points that we as Christians should be paying attention to with our whole hearts. It becomes clear that the theme of his writing is indeed "joy". It doesn't matter how bad Paul had tortured up to that point, how he suffered, and was confined in a jail cell. He still felt joy in Christ and could happily spread the good word through his writing. His life is truly amazing.
"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
- Philippians 4:4-7
Dr. Jeremiah offers real-life stories to illustrate impacting thoughts. I liked how he brought in a variety of people's story like this -- whether the person is someone famous we know today, or someone from the history books. It was interesting how he brought into focus obscure stories and created a spiritual analogy out of it.
A lot of Dr. Jeremiah's writing is complemented with the work of other religious leaders, and I like the steadfast effect this creates. He doesn't just rely on his own answers, but the life-long discoveries and truths that other leaders like him have succeeded in finding.
*Also included in the back are chapter questions for personal application or group study.
This is a great Bible study on Philippians!
"Paul saw life and death as equally desirable. If he continued to live, he would come to know and love and serve the Lord more fully. If he died, he would completely and finally and perfectly know Him."

Decent study of Philippians
By Debbie
"Count It All Joy" is a Bible study on the book of Philippians. Each chapter started with a couple of paragraphs from Philippians, which the author then worked through going verse by verse. He usually started with a sports-related modern story, and he frequently quoted insights from other authors. He did word studies, rephrased verses "in plain English" so the intent was clear, included background information, and quoted similar verses from other parts of the Bible. There were study questions (and suggested activities) at the end of the book for small groups or personal study.
This study did provide me with some insights into the verses that I hadn't considered before. However, some parts of the study felt disconnected due to the frequent quotes and serial word studies. The verse was not re-quoted when being examined, so sometimes I'd lose track of what the verse specifically said or how the insight into word meaning clarified a point. This didn't happen very often, but it would have been nice to have the verse under examination written again where it was being examined.
Overall, I'd recommend this book to those who are interested in studying Philippians and who like this author's style.
