Review
“The text is clearly written and paced at a level appropriate for the first or second year undergraduate linguistics student. The authors’ deftly make use of the knowledge that students already bring to the course as speakers of language, pointing out and explaining regularities and oddities in Canadian English and always supplementing arguments with examples from other languages. This is an invaluable pedagogical strategy for capturing the interest of the undergraduate student… The summaries and exercises are invaluable. I use them exhaustively both as in-class examples and as homework problems.”
-Chandan Narayan, University of Toronto
“The Canadian content provides students a meaningful and assessable foundation from which to build their formal understanding of language. This is one of the key reasons I have adopted this text….The presentation of topics meets the needs of the target first-year audience very successfully. Explanations are almost always clear and concise and avoid burdening the student with too many details of the topics. The online component is a very useful means of providing access to interesting expansions of the topics that both the student and the instructor can take advantage of.”
-Sandra P. Kirkham, University of Victoria
“I really like the comprehensive approach. I appreciate that these [more advanced] areas are covered as interested students can do their own reading if I do not have time for a very thorough presentation in my lectures… .I find the book’s level and pace appropriate. The main reason I like O’Grady’s book is that students can keep it and use it in some upper level courses as a reference material.”
-Magda Stroinska, McMaster University
